about

picture of sam burtonSam Burton is a writer, researcher, and strategist focusing on culture, identity, technology — and the spaces where they collide.

Sam is currently Director of Insights at the Mozilla Foundation, where she leads the team that publishes the Internet Health Report. More detail about her work experience can be found on Linkedin.

Sam is also the founder of Whose Data, an open source project to help Canadians find out who owns — and what options we have to control — data collected about us.

Sam identifies as a mixed race cis-gendered woman and first generation Canadian. Her hometowns are Toronto and Scarborough, where she grew up daughter to a white father who immigrated from England; a Jewish stepmum who also immigrated from England; and a Chinese mother who immigrated from Trinidad.

Sam can often be found writing next to a cortado, sharing ideas on Twitter (on weekdays) and good books on Read More Fiction (on weekends), cooking elaborate meals with her partner, and tying figure-eight knots in a climbing gym.
